Introduction & History

Thermal Engineering Division of KSME

The Thermal Engineering Division of KSME (TED-KSME) was launched with the name of “Committee of Thermal and Fluid Mechanics” in 1980. In 1990, the name of the TED was changed to “Thermal and Fluid Engineering Division”, and then the Thermal and Fluid Engineering division was divided into “Thermal Engineering Division” and “Fluid Engineering Division (FED)” in January 1998.

The name of the “Division Chair” of TED-KSME was promoted to “President of TED” in 2005. The TED-KSME consists of a president, vice presidents (less than 5 peoples), and directors including general affairs, financial affairs, academic affairs and industrial cooperation affairs. The fist academic forum sponsored by TED-KSME was held on July 15, 1967 and then the TED-KSME annual conference and academic forum have been held separately since 1993. Spring and Autumn Annual conferences of TED-KSME have been held separately since 2005. Besides the annual conferences and academic forums, many lecture meetings and short courses for cutting-edge technology are also held sponsored by TED-KSME every year.

TED-KSME hosted the first KSME-JSME Thermal and Fluid Engineering Conference (TFEC) in 1988, and have hosted the KSME-JSME TFEC every 2 years (held in Japan and Korea every 2 years in turn). In addition, TED-KSME hosted the 18th International Symposium on Transport Phenomena (ISTP-18) in Daejeon, KAIST, August 27-30, 2007. Recently, TED-KSME sponsored the first Pacific Thermal Engineering Conference (PRETEC-2016) in Hawaii, USA, March 13-17, 2016. TED-KSME is willing to host and sponsor domestic and international conferences and academic forums related with thermal engineering, and will share academic and technological information with international societies such as Heat transfer society of Japan (HTSJ), Heat and Mass Transfer Society of China (HMTSC) and American Society of Thermal and Fluids Engineers (ASTFE).

History

The Thermal Engineering Division of KSME (hereinafter TED) was first established as “Committee of Thermal and Fluid Mechanics” in 1980 when the number of KSME committees increased to six. According to partial adjustment of the names and classification of the committees in 1990, the name of TED changed to “Thermal and Fluid Engineering Division”. Following continuous internal and external growth, the Thermal and Fluid Engineering Division split into Thermal Engineering Division and Fluid Engineering Division in January 1998. According to revision of the articles of association of KSME in 2005, the division chair was promoted to chair.

In order to encourage academic activities of each division, the enforcement regulations of KSME permits establishment of subcommittees under divisions. Under the Thermal Engineering Division, the Heat Pipe Subcommittee was established in 1999 followed by Cooling Technology for Electronic Products Subcommittee in 2000 and Plasma Thermal Engineering Subcommittee in 2014.
